Abstract
Surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters are critical components in modern RF communication systems, but abnormal in-band group delay characteristics can significantly impact system performance, particularly in applications requiring precise timing and phase coherence. This presentation presents comprehensive research findings on the causes, characterization, and mitigation of abnormal in-band group delay issues in SAW filters. We will investigate the fundamental mechanisms leading to group delay distortions, including acoustic wave scattering effects, electrode geometry influences, and substrate-induced anomalies. The research employs advanced measurement techniques and 3D electromagnetic-acoustic co-simulation methodologies to accurately characterize group delay behavior across different filter topologies and frequency ranges. Key findings include the identification of specific electrode configurations that minimize delay variations, the impact of temperature and power levels on delay stability, and the relationship between group delay characteristics and other filter parameters such as insertion loss and return loss. We will present practical design guidelines and compensation techniques that have been successfully implemented in production filters, demonstrating significant improvements in group delay flatness and overall filter performance.
